INTRODUCTION

YouBike is a 24-hour bike-sharing service that offers convenient short-distance transportation in the city. It's currently available in most cities across Taiwan and has become a highly popular option for commuters seeking an alternative to public transportation. As of September 6th, 2022, YouBike rides have surpassed 600 million.
Based on the statistical report released in January 2022 by the Statistics Office of Taipei City Government Transportation Bureau, the largest group of YouBike users are individuals between the ages of 20 and 30 who primarily use it for commuting purposes, followed by students.

OBJECTIVE

The YouBike App provides instant and convenient access to station locations, enabling users to rent bikes and stay updated on the status of nearby stations. Despite this, it didn't perform as well as expected. Along with technical issues of the system, it also fails to offer a seamless search experience for users.
However, the official YouBike 1.0 and 2.0 apps, which are meant to help users find nearby stations, don't quite fulfill the needs of most users when it comes to their usage. Regardless of the system, interface, or even user experience, there is a significant discrepancy between what the user expects and what is currently being provided.

THE CHALLENGE

By gathering and analyzing feedback from the App Store (iOS) and Play Store (Android), we have identified the following overarching categories of challenges encountered by users of the YouBike 1.0 and 2.0 applications.

What Else Did We Do

We presented the interface and flow of the YouBike App through an interactive map. Also, we identified issues with the user interface and user experience of the product.

Furthermore, we conducted a comparative analysis by evaluating similar competing products in the market that also offer the same three functions as our product. This helped us to identify areas of opportunity for our product.

THE SOLUTION

We utilized a double-diamond model to guide our redesign process, which was divided into four distinct stages: Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver. At each stage, we employed unique methods and approaches to ensure the successful completion of the overall design.

Following the user flow of the original YouBike App, we then began planning the new user flow based on our design objectives, with a focus on the rental process as illustrated in the figure below:

After conducting the process mentioned above, we have established the following redesign direction for the YouBike App:

Integration of the two versions of YouBike and improved station identification

Based on our comparative analysis, we have found that the current YouBike rental and return stations do not offer users an immediate display of available bikes and parking spaces at each station. To view this information, users must click on the station icon, with the color change only indicating an absence of spaces. This can lead to a suboptimal user experience.

Station Keyword Search and Bookmarking

Users have reported that the current station search rules lack keyword search functionality, requiring them to remember the precise name of the station. This imposes an unnecessary burden on users' memory and interrupts the search process, necessitating the use of a separate app to search for stations. And this poses a significant challenge for users seeking to plan their routes in advance or conduct station searches quickly.

Improved Station Navigation

n the current iteration of the application, utilizing the station navigation feature automatically redirects users to a third-party map application, resulting in disruptions to the service's functionality. Consequently, the station navigation function is rendered impractical.
To address this challenge, we have overhauled the application to feature an intuitive station navigation system, allowing users to locate and navigate to stations with ease.

Highlighting the Brand Recognition

The initial version of the YouBike application solely showcased the brand style on the App icon and Landing Page, with minimal brand recognition throughout the remainder of the application. In accordance with the YouBike brand ethos, we have collaborated with the design system to explore color options that amplify the brand and imbue the overall style with an urban and youthful aesthetic.
